Dress Design Inspiration

The three-dimensional swirl-like forms drew inspiration from the Infinity symbol, traditionally representing ongoing and continuous entities. Humans erroneously assumed that our bountiful planet can sustain our lifestyles forever, hence my use of the concept of infinity. However, the resources on Earth are ironically limited, and we are jeopardizing our existence through our callous disregard for our environment. That is why the Infinity symbol on the dress is disrupted and contorted, serving as a forewarning to raise awareness of natural systems falling out of equilibrium.

The dynamic structures were constructed with basic shapes like squares and triangles observed in a tonoscope (a device that transforms sound into visual representations on screen) when meditative sounds were intoned. The spikes convey the harsh brutal reality of Nature while the sinuous curves remind us of the Circle of Life, that we are all part of something bigger. The inner bodysuit is adorned with organic, intersecting contour lines, representing intangible forces and communal groups that connect us together.

In order for Mother Earth to thrive, we need Earth-centric systems that are balanced and move towards a circular economy. This futuristic wearable art showcases the possibilities of responsible design, and the healing power of societal dedication and kindness.

This piece was a communal effort, of a community coming together to collect more than 200 tetrapak cartons.
